Kip McGrath buys a majority stake in Tutorfly
Tutorfly is a tutoring business concentrating on the peer-to-peer section of the market, which achieved rapid growth during its initial start-up phase. KME CEO and Managing Director Storm McGrath said this purchase was a strategic move for the company. "We are looking to expand our business into other areas of the tutoring and supplementary education market and in particular the US, which is the largest tutoring market in the world," Mr McGrath said.

When Keith Crawford, CAVE Program Director, read an introductory email from a company called Tutorfly, he was intrigued. "What we didn't really have was the infrastructure to schedule and connect for the tutoring," Crawford said. "It almost sounded too good to be true." Tutorfly sough to expand its services to colleges and universities—and hand-selected Chico State to beta-test its product for free. Thanks to Tutorfly, CAVE was able to provide a ull slate of fall tutoring: Thirty-six tutors—all Chico State student volunteers—helped 43 local school kids, logging more than 1,100 hours of work.

Homestead High alum's tutoring website benefits nonprofit
Tutorfly.org is a web application that facilitates peer tutoring within a school and allows parents to tailor their search for a tutor by a number of criteria, such as subject expertise and past teachers. Tutors can be hired at a rate of $20 per hour, and for the Homestead launch period all proceeds will be donated to Sunnyvale Community Services. "There are a lot of cool features. Parents can filter by subject, class year and teacher. You can have a student who has been in the same exact shoes as your child one or two years ago."

Chico State volunteer program CAVE accepting volunteers for virtual tutoring
CAVE's largest program, tutoring students from the Chico Unified School District, has gone virtual with the help of a platform called Tutorfly. The tutoring program through CAVE has a history that dates back to 1966. In the fall semester, CAVE volunteers contributed 2,192 volunteer hours in Butte County as well as awarding 92 of the 264 units awarded to students involved with Chico State's Associated Students, according to Chico State Marketing Manager Anna Paladini.
